Electronic Health Record Modernization and Data Analytics for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
Objectives
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the VA Millenium contract needed to modernize their electronic health records system. The goals of this contract are to share patient seamlessly shared between VA, DoD, and community providers through a secure system, to make health information much easier to share and to improve healthcare delivery coordination to make it faster and safer.
The EHR modernization will also make care by all providers more transparent for the entire care team. The VA will also add capabilities to the system as necessary to meet the special needs of Veterans, VA clinicians, and community-care partners. This transformation effort will improve veteran care and improve trust in the VA system.
Challenges
Limited data sharing between VA, DoD and other agencies
Lack of modern architecture for real-time data analysis
Improved healthcare delivery and faster care
Solution
Avenir Technology’s staff supported Oracle/Cerner in their transition to the Cerner EHR solution. As part the $10B Federal DoD/VA EHR Millennium contract, Avenir’s staff lead application modernization efforts and oversaw the transition from monolithic systems to microservices and migrating data from private to public cloud.
The staff also led data governance efforts and assisted with data analytics applications of the EHR system. This involved establishing governance policies, training staff, and selecting data stewards, ensuring standardized, secure, and reliable data management for VA leadership.
Results
6 VA sites migrated to modern Cerner EHR
Improved healthcare outcomes
“Whether it’s helping everybody in VA to be more effective through the desktop tools we provide, or whether it’s the critical systems in health care and benefits, we’re at the heart of delivering that experience to Veterans.”
